Dyson DC24 small and happy

by James
(Wheaton, IL)

After being on the fence for a couple of years, I finally took the plunge and bought a Dyson. My motivation? I had bought my 3rd vacuum in as many years, only to constantly have them burn out / break / be underpowered in dealing with everyday cleaning, cat hair and people hair.

We don't have a big house, and I don't have a lot of storage space, so I was looking for a more compact model like the DC24. It also didn't hurt that the DC24 is the lower-priced entry in the Dyson upright line. After using it a year, It's still running smoothly and I'm pretty happy! It's easy to use, easy to empty, powerful, doesn't seem to loose power and overall is worth every penny. In dealing with hair wrapping around the beater brush, it has a ingenious safety feature that cuts off power to the spinning brush if it encounters too much resistance, saving the motor from burning up.

Some downsides: a pretty short cord and 20th century cord management (we still have to wrap the cord manually around guides? really?), and a learning curve to figure out best use of the wand attachments (really, they did think about it, it's just not that obvious!) Still, all things considered, best vacuum I've owned. After months of checking prices at Target and Amazon, I finally caught a pretty decent sale with free shipping from Amazon. Put off by the regular sticker price? Just be patient. It's like airline fares. It'll go up and down, just be ready to snag it when it's down.
